Family History

Parents Reuben and Elizabeth Kettle of Foul Anchor Lane, Tydd, Cambridgeshire. 1901 census: the family is living at 8 Dagmar Grove, Beeston; his father was born in Barrow on Soar, Leicestershire and is a wood machine sawyer; his mother was born at Tydd St Giles, Cambridgeshire; they had been married for 5 years; Reuben Charles age 4. 1911 census: living at Foul Anchor Lane, Tydd, Cambridgeshire; father is a publican, age 50, mother age 52, Reuben, age 14. He appears to have been the only child of the marriage.

Military History

Was serving onboard SS Westergate, a merchant ship owned at the time of her loss by Franco-British SS Co Ltd (Olivier & Co), Cardiff, at the time of his death. The ship was sunk by U-Boat 80 (Max Viebeg) 22 miles off Start Point en route Hartlepool-Carthagena (24 casualties). Buried Geffosses Churchyard, Manche, France; his grave is near north wall of church.
