William Herbert Clixby

William Herbert was born in 1892 in West Bridgford and was the son of Frederick William, a grocer, and his second wife Betsy Ellen Clixby née Naylor of 62 Melton Road, West Bridgford. His father Frederick was born in 1856 in Gainsborough and his mother Betsy Ellen Naylor was born in 1857 also in Gainsborough. They were married in 1891; their marriage was recorded in the Holbeach registration district. They went on to have the following children all of whom were born in West Bridgford, Nottingham, William Henry b1893, Edith Ellen b1895, Norman Hugh b1897. His mother Betsy Ellen Clixby died on 26th May 1902 she was 35 yrs of age. His father was previously married in 1883 in Nottingham to Elizabeth Gilliant by whom he had the following children: John George Gilliant Clixby b1885, Ethel Mary b1886, Fred Arthur b1887, Norah b1890 his first wife died in 1890 aged 32 yrs her death was recorded in the Basford Registration District. His father married for a third time, marrying Margaret Dare in 1911; their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. In the 1911 census his family are living at 62 Melton Road, West Bridgford and are shown as Frederick William 54 yrs a grocer he is living with his third wife Margaret Clixby 51 yrs (born 1860 Redditch, Worcestershire) and his children , Norah 20 yrs no occupation listed, William Henry 18 yrs a student teacher, Edith Ellen 16 yrs no occupation listed and Norman Hugh 14 yrs a scholar. His brother younger Norman enlisted on 2nd June 1916 and served with the 12th (Pioneer) and 17th (Welbeck Rangers) battalions of the Sherwood Foresters. He was discharged due to wounds on 30th April 1918.
