Albert Owen Hewson was born in 1897 at Nottingham and was the son of the late George Edward a draper and dealer and Sarah Jane Hewson née Dove of 26 Forest Road, Nottingham. His father George Edward was born in 1855 in Alford, Lincolnshire and his mother Sarah Jane Dove was born in 1857 in Bardsney also in Lincolnshire they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Lincoln Registration District. They went on to have four children all of whom were born in Nottingham, they were, Ernest b1886 Mabel Dove b1887, Doris Eveline b1893 and Albert Owen b1897 In the 1901 census we find the family living at the Drapers Shops, 153,155 and 157 Denman Street. His father George Edward was last seen alive on 14th December 1911 and his body was recovered from the Beeston Ryland Lock on 12th January 1912. A coroner’s inqury into the death was held on 13th January and no suspicious circumstances were found and the verdict of the jury was that he was ‘found drowned’ He was buried on 15th January 1912 at the Church Cemetery, Mansfield Road, Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Forest Road, Nottingham and are shown as George Edward 56 yrs a draper and dealer, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 54 yrs she is assisting her husband in his business, and their children, Mabel Dove 24 yrs, assisting in the family business, Doris Eveline 18 yrs assisting in family business and Albert Owen 14 yrs a scholar.
Private Albert Own Hewson enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1/6th battalion, Sherwood Foresters he was killed in action on 3rd September 1918 and is buried at Fouquieres Churchyard Extension, France, grave reference IV.F.15
His older brother Private Ernest Edward Hewson enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1/8th battalion, Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 10th September 1918 during the battle of Arras, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Bay 7.
