Horace was born in 1899 in Basford and was the son of Albert a school caretaker and Ada Fearn née Hallam they lived at 364 Berridge Road, Nottingham. His father Albert was born in 1868 and his mother Ada Hallam was born in 1869 , both were born in Basford. They were married in 1889 their marriage being recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 8 children , sadly 2 of whom died in infancy or childhood prior to 1911. The children were all born in Basford (except Samuel who was born in Lenton ) and were Maud b1891, Albert b1893, Lily b1895, Samuel b1897, Horace b1899 and George b1904. In the 1911 census the family are living at 233 Noel Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham and were shown as Albert 43 yrs a school caretaker, he is living with his wife Ada 42 yrs and their children Maud 20 yrs a carriage straightener in a lace factory, Albert 18 yrs a hosiery frimmer, Lily a machinist in printing works, Samuel 14 yrs a n errand boy, Horace 12 yrs as scholar and George 7 yrs a scholar.
Private Horace Fearn, enlisted on 4th February 1917 at Nottingham he gave his age as 18 yrs and 48 days, his address as 364 Berridge Road, Nottingham , he gave his religion as that of Wesleyan. He was first posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment on 21st February 1917 . He was sent to France on 31st March 1918 and there posted to the base depot of 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment on 2nd April 1918. He was killed in action on 17th May 1918 and is buried in Caestre Military Cemetery.
In memoriam published on 16th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “FEARN. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. H. Fearn, killed in action May 16th, 1918. Gone, but not forgotten. – From sorrowing father and mother. “FEARN. – In loving memory of my dear beloved brother, Horace Fearn, killed in action May 16th, 1918.
