Stanley was born on 21st December 1880 in Nottingham and was the son of Ebenezer a solicitor and Emily Florence Cartwright née Clapham of Ely Villa, Arundel Road, Kemp Town Brighton.His father Ebenezer was born in 1841 in Leicester and his mother Emily Florence Clapham was born in 18148 in Camberwell, London, they were married in 1873 in Kensington and had 8 children 1 of whom died in infancy, their children listed on the 1901/1911 census were Hubert b1875, Allan b1876, Oscar b1877, Basil b1879,Stanley b1881, Ronald b1884 and Mary b1885 all were born in Nottingham. In 1891 and 1901 the family lived at 41 Baker Street Nottingham. In 1911 Ebenezer and Emily along with Mary were living in Beckenham Kent with their son Basil Cartwright, a soft goods agent, he was the head of the household. Ebenezer and Emily later lived at Ely Villa Arundel Road Kemp Town Brighton. In 1911 Ebenezer and Emily along with Mary were living in Beckenham Kent. Lieutenant Stanley Cartwright, 8th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, attached 2nd Rhodesian Regiment ,he arrived in theatre (East Africa) 14/3/1916.He was killed in action in German East Africa on 17th August 1916. He was attached to the Machine Gun Corps. He is buried in Morogoro Cemetery Dar Es Salaam.
His brother Sergeant Ronald Cartwright served with the 9th battalion Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 9th January 1916. Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 2 September 1916: 'Cartwright, killed in action August 17th, Lieutenant Stanley Cartwright, fifth son of Mr and Mrs E Cartwright late 41 Baker Street, Nottingham.'
