Family History

Henry Stevenson was born in 1890 in Nottingham and was the son of the late George Stevenson a brick layers labourer and Elizabeth Ann Stevenson née Cheetham, of 19, Front Row, Carlton Rd., Nottingham. His father George was born in 1854 in Newark and his mother Elizabeth Ann Cheetham was born in 1862 in Sutton in Ashfield, they were married in 1881 in Nottingham and went on to have 7 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood their surviving children were all born in Nottingham and were Joseph William b1882, Emily b1884, Mary b1886, Harry b 1890 and Frederick b186. In the 1911 census the family are living at 41 Carter Gate, Nottingham and are shown as George 57 yrs a brick layers labourer he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 49 yrs a lace hand and their children Harry 20 yrs a labourer and Frederick 15 yrs an errand lad.

Military History

Private Harry Stevenson, enlisted at Nottingham and initially served with the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire ) Regiment , he was serving with the the 2/8th Battalion when he died as a result of gas poisoning on 18th January 1918. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery, where he is commemorated on the screen wall.

Death notice published 21st January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STEVENSON. – Died from effects of gas, January 18th, 1918, Pte. Harry Stevenson, Sherwoods, 19 Front-row, Carlton-road, Nottingham.
