Family History

Walter Oldknow was born in 1886 in Beeston and was the son of Henry an iron turner and Ada Emma Oldknow née Blower of 27 Brighton Street, Nottingham. His father Henry Oldknow was born in 1865 in Nottingham and his mother Ada Emma Blower was born in 1865 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1883 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children, all born in Nottingham, Ada Ellen b1884, Walter b1886, Violet Evelina b1889, William b1891, Florence May b1893, Henry Oldham b1895, Mildred Annie b1898 and Ernest b1910. Walter married his wife Caroline Bennett in 1908 in Nottingham, they lived at 52, Cooper St., Nottingham and had 5 children, Cyril Walter b1909, Ada b1910 (died 1910) Gladys b1913, Ivy b1915 and Henry b1917. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 27 Brighton Street, Nottingham and are shown as Henry 47 yrs an iron turner , he is living with his wife Ada Emma 46 yrs and their children, Violet Evaline 22 yrs a lace maker, William 20 yrs a bobbin and carriage hand, Florence May 18 yrs a lace maker, Henry Oldham 16 yrs a bobbin and carriage hand, Mildred Annie 13 yrs a lace worker and Ernest 1 yr. In the same 1911 census Henry and his family are living at 52 Cooper Street, Nottingham and are shown as Walter 25 yrs a bobbin and carriage hand, he is living with his wife Caroline 24 yrs a lace finisher and their son Cyril Walter 2 yrs. Following his death his widow Caroline was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week for herself and her 4 children, which took effect from 1st January 1919.

Military History

Private Walter Oldknow enlisted on 9th November 1914 at Nottingham, he was 28 yrs and 234 days old, and a factory hand. He was posted to the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment joining at the depot in Derby on 12th November 1914. He landed in France on 18th May 1915 and was wounded , gun shot wound to the neck on 19th December 1915 when he was returned to England for treatment. He went back out to France on 23rd May 1916. He returned to England on 19th September 1916 and was discharged form the Army on 14th November 1916 as being no longer fit for active service his discharge address was 52 Cooper Street, Nottingham. He was awarded a silver badge number 74499 and died on 25th November 1918 and is buried in the Nottingham General Cemetery

His brother Henry Oldham Oldkow enlisted on 3rd September 1914 in London, he was 19 yrs and 9 months of age, he served with The Buffs (East Kent Regiment ) He served throughout the war landing in France on 1st June 1915 he was discharged on 7th April 1919, his discharged address was 56 Grainger Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham, he had served for 4 yrs and 217 days
