Registered at birth as James Mellors Start, he was the son of William Mellors and Margaret Annie Start. He appears on the 1891 Census as James Mellors Start along with siblings William Mellors Start (1882), Fanny Mellors Start (1888), Kate Mellors Start (1890) and Annie Mellors Start (1891). They lived at 5, Budge Row, Mount Pleasant, St Nicholas, Nottingham in 1891 and 1901 by which time their surname was cited as Mellors. Three more children had been born by 1901 - Nancy Mellors (1894), Frank Mellors (1896) and Thomas Mellors (1899). In J/F/M/1906, James married Martha Smith and in 1911 they lived at 6, Kid Street, Platt Street, Nottingham with their sons Ernest (1908) and Albert (1911). All four are listed as Mellors with the middle name Start in 1911. Living with them was Martha's son James William Smith who had been born in 1904. Martha later lived at 5, Henry Place, Henry Street, Nottingham.
James Mellors served with the 473rd Employment Company Labour Corps. Formerly with the Sherwood Foresters, he died of pneumonia on 4th December 1918 at the Military Hospital, Ripon. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.
In Memoriam published 4th December 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post: 'MELLORS. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. J. Mellors, who died at Ripon of pneumonia, December 4th, 1918.
