Edwin Kirk was born in 1878 in Basford and was the son of John Isaac a lace curtain twist hand and Sarah (known as Sally) Kirk of 10 Abbey Street Old Lenton Nottingham. His father John Isaac was born in 1852 in Nottingham and his mother Sarah was born in 1853 in Nottingham, they were married C1870 and went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy, their surviving children were, Kate b1871 Basford, Herbert b1874 Basford, Edwin b1878 Radford, Ernest b1882 Basford, Joseph Isaac b1885 Radford and Florence Rose b1887 Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 25 Tyne Street, Lenton and are shown as John Isaac 59 yrs a lace curtain twist hand, he is living with his wife Sally 58 yrs and their children , Edwin 33 yrs a dyers labourer Joseph Isaac 26 yrs an art cane worker and Florence Rose 24 yrs a net lace mender.
Private Edwin Kirk, had seen previous service during the Boer War and had been awarded the Queen's South African Medal. He re enlisted at Derby on 11th March 1913, and was mobilised for war and served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went out to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 18th September 1915. He embarked at Imbros on 29th January 1916 arriving in Alexandria on 3rd February 1916. He later went to the Western Front landing in France on 5th July 1916 and was posted to the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters on 21st July 1916. He was wounded on 9th August 1916 and admitted to the 34 Casualty Clearing Station. He was returned to England on 15th August 1916 and was treated at Brighton Hospital. He died of his wounds in a Leicester war hospital on 28th February 1917. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.
