Family History

Albert Hose was born in 1891 in Sneinton and was the son of William a frame work knitter and Harriett Hose nee Wheelhouse of 35, Royal Oak Hill, Carlton Rd, Nottingham. Both his father William and his mother Harriett Wheellhouse were born in 1857 in Nottingham, they were married in 1875 in Nottingham and had 13 children , sadly two of whom died in infancy, their children were : Annie, Mary, William, Arabella, John, Albert, Harry, Eliza, Emma, Marshall and Gertrude all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census his mother is living at 13 Davis Street, Carlton Road, she is shown as 52 yrs married and is living with her children William 29 yrs, Eliza 15 yrs, Harry 17 yrs and Emma 13 yrs. His father William also on the same census is to be found living at 8 Rancliffe Terrace, Pym St, Nottingham , he is 56 yrs and is living with his married daughter Mary Packer and family.

Military History

Rifleman Albert Hose, enlisted in Nottingham on 5th September 1914, he was 24 yrs and 31 days old, he gave his occupation as that of a rigger. He was posted to the 10th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps on 21st September 1914. He landed in France on 21s t July 1915. He was wound in action on 4th June 1916, on 3rd September 1916 and 2nd March 1917, on this final occasion he was returned to England on board the Hospital Ship St Patrick on 4th March 1917. He was admitted on 7th April 1918 to the Carrington Military Hospital, Nottingham suffering from pneumonia, he died at 8.30 pm on 9th April 1918 and he is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery, where he is commemorated on the Screen Wall.

One year has passed, and still to memory dear, we breathe his loving name and shed a silent tear. – Loving sister Polly, Ernest, children. “HOSE. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Rfn. A. Hose, died military hospital April 9th, 1918. Could we but clasp his hand and see his loving smile, that means so much to us. – Loving sister Bella, Harry, children. “HOSE. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Rfn. A. Hose, died military hospital April 9th, 1918. We cannot clasp thy hand, dear brother, your face we cannot see, but let this little token show we still remember thee. – Loving brother Harry, fiancée Maggie. “HOSE. – In loving remembrance of our dear brother Albert, died military hospital April 9th, 1918. How sweet is the memory of departed worth. – Loving sister Lizzie, Harry. “HOSE. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother Rfn. A. Hose, 13 Crown-street, Carlton-road, died military hospital April 9th, 1918, after 3½ years' service, aged 27.
