Charles was born in 1880 the son of Thomas William China a lace worker and Mary China née China He was the brother of Mary, Ellen, John, Emma and Thomas China. Thomas William was born in 1833 , Mary China was born in 1847 both were born in Barnstable Devon, they were married in 27th February 1864 in Barnstable, they had 7 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. Charles married Catherine Frogatt (born 22nd January 1885) on 6th February 1904 at Nottingham Registration Office. On 7th November 1906 their son Thomas William was born in Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 21a Page Street Nottingham Charles William 30 yrs is a french polisher, he is living with his wife Catherine 27 yrs and their son Thomas William 4 yrs. In 1911 his parents were living at 179 Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham, Thomas 78 yrs is a retired lace maker, he is living with his wife Mary 64 yrs. Commencing 18th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence.
Charles attested at Nottingham on 11th December 1915 and the following day he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised on 12th July 1916 and reported for duty at Derby on 13th July 1916. He underwent his training and on 27th January 1917 he joined the South Staffordshire Regiment. He served on home duties until 10th February 1917 and on 11th February he joined the British Expeditionary Force in France. He served on the Western Front until 1st July 1917 when he was returned to home duties on 2nd July. He was posted to the Labour Corps on 3rd August 1917 and eventually discharged from the army on 1st December 1917 as being no longer physically fit to serve. He died on 17th May 1918 of pneumonia and is buried in the Nottingham General Cemetery. Nottingham General Cemetery Screen Wall: 03302
18th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CHINA. – On May 17th, at 50, Peas Hill-road, the beloved husband of Catherine China, of pneumonia, in his 37th year. Peace after pain.
