William Batchford

William was born in 1896 the son of Enoch and Mary Ann Batchford (nee Stacey). Enoch was born in Nottingham in 1865 and Mary Ann in Woodborough, Nottinghamshire, about 1866. They were married in 1884 and according to the 1911 Census they had 12 children of whom only 8 were still living at the time of the census. Eight children were named on the three census between 1891 and 1911; Clara (b. 1886), Harry (b. 1890), Arthur (b. 1892), Enoch Frederick (b. 1893), William (b. 1895), Rose Elizabeth (b. 1897, bap. 7 March 1898), Gladys Alberta (b. 7 July 1900) and Dorothy Florence E (b. 27 October 1902). Clara, Harry, Arthur, Enoch Frederick and William were all baptised in Nottingham on 21 October 1895. In 1891 Enoch (26), a twist hand, and Mary Ann (25) were living at 156A Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham, with their two children, Clara (4) and Harry (1). By 1901 the family was at a different address (illegible on census) but still living in St Ann's. Enoch and Mary Ann now had seven children; Clara (14) in work, Harry (11), Arthur (9), Enoch (7), William (5), Rose (3) and Gladys (8 months). On 25 June 1902 Enoch was admitted to Notts B Lunatic Asylum. His youngest daughter, Florence, was born four months later on 27 October 1902. Enoch was an inpatient at the Nottingham Asylum at the time of the 1911 Census when Mary Ann, working as a net mender and described as married but also the head of the household, was living at 34 Massey Street, St Ann's, Nottingham. Seven of her children were at home on the night of the census: Harry (21) threader lace, Arthur (19) threader lace, Enoch (17) printer, William (15) threader lace, Rose (13) finisher (blouse), Gladys (10) and Dorothy (8). Also in the household was Harry's wife, Emma nee Miles (20), whom he had married in 1910. William's mother, Mary Ann, died in 1928 aged 62. Her husband, Enoch, died in Nottingham City Hospital on 3 May 1945; his home address was 43 Hutchinson Street, Nottingham. Of William's siblings: Clara has not yet been traced after the 1901 Census and no further details have been found of Rose after the 1911 Census. Harry, who had married Emma Miles in 1910, died in 1960 aged 71. Emma died in 1967 aged 75. Harry may have served in the Sherwood Foresters during the war (31386 Corporal). Arthur married Elsie May and died on 13 January 1963 aged 70. His home address was 120 Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham. Arthur may have served in the Sherwood Foresters during the war (41910 Private). Enoch married in 1913 and died in 1954 aged 60. He served in the Sherwood Foresters during the war (26871 Private). Gladys married William Morley in 1924 and died in 1983 aged 83. Dorothy married Horace Hancock in 1922 and died in 2001 aged 99.
