William George Withers was born in 1896 at Harby and was the son of the late William Thomas a farmer and Nellie Catherine Withers née Curtis of Station Road, Harby. His father William Thomas was born in 1856 at Harby and died in 1907 aged 51 yrs, his mother Nellie Catherine Curtis was born in 1871 at Harby, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Gainsborough registration district, they had the following children, William George b1896, Glen Alexander b1899 Emily b1902 and Frank b1906. In 1901 they lived on North Harby Road Harby. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Cottage, Harby and were shown as Nellie 38 yrs a widowed farmer, she is living with her sister Emily Curtis 33 yrs a domestic helper and her children George 15 yrs a farmers son working on the farm, Glenn 12 yrs a scholar, Emily 9 yrs a scholar and Frank 5 yrs

Military History

Private William George Withers enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at Harby he served with 'A' Company 2/5th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 9th April 1917 and is buried at Templeux-le-Guerard Communal Cemetery Extension Somme France Grave Reference: A 14
