Ernest Goddard was the son of William and Mary Goddard (nee Paling) of Main Street, Lowdham. He wa born in Lowdham on 8th February 1890 and baptised on 25th February 1890 at St Marys Church, Lowdham.
His father William was born in 1851 in Lowdham and his mother, Mary Paling, was born in 1848, also in Lowdham. They were married in 1874 (Southwell Registration district) and had six children who were also born in Lowdham: Clara b.1878, Violet b.1880, Kate b.1883 Willie b.1885, Ernest b.1890, Winifred Sybil b.1893.
Mary Goddard died on 2nd March 1911. Her husband William (59), a foreman platelayer (Midland Railway), was still living in Lowdham at the time of the 1911 census. Also in the home are three of his children; Willie (25) a seedman's assistant, Ernest (21) a nursery gardener and Winifred Sybil (17), no occupation given but may have been carrying out household duties for the family.
Ernest Goddard enlisted on 3rd September 1914 and served with the 3rd Battalion South Wales Borderers. He landed in France on 5th September 1915.
Ernest was discharged from the Army on 4th September 1918, 'no longer fit for war service' - he was had been gassed - and was awarded Silver War Badge number 15965. He was living at Pentrepoe, Monmouthshire, at the time of his discharge.
Ernest died on 18th October 1920 of pulmonary tuberculosis and was buried in Lowdham (St Mary) churchyard extension (north part). He was 30 years old.
His medal card bears an address in Newport.
