Family History

Percy Read was born in 1892 at Bulwell, he was the son of William Edward Read a coal miner and Clara Jane Read née Astbury of 17 Edgware Road, Bulwell. His father William Edward was born in 1866 at Adlington, Lancashire, his mother Clara Jane Astbury was born in 1867 at Bulwell, they were married on 13th October 1890 at St Matthews Church, Burnley, they went on to have 8 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 17 Edgware Road, Bulwell, William Edward is 45 yrs and is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Jane 44 yrs and their children, Nancy 21 yrs a blouse machinist, Walter 20 yrs a coal miner ganger, Percy 18 yrs a pony driver coal miner, Fred Charles 14 yrs a butchers assistant, Jane 12 yrs, Ida 6 yrs, Harold 6 yrs and Clarence 3 years of age.

Military History

Pte. Percy Read, 13th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, enlisted at Nottingham, was killed in action on 27th September 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
