Family history

Matthew Bates Hopkins was born in 1880 the son of Edmund a labourer and Annie Hopkins (née Bates ).

His father Edmund Rodger Hopkins was born in 1857 in Godmanchester, Huntingdon and his mother Annie Bates was born in 1860 in Lower Heyford, Northamptonshire. Married in 1882 at Northampton, they had the following children, Matthew Bates b.1880 Nether Heyford, Edmund b.1883 Nether Heyford, Alfred b.1883 Nether Heyford, Wynn Henry b.1886 Nether Heyford, Myra b.1888 Nether Heyford, George b.1890 Nether Heyford, Hephzibah b.1891 Nether Heyford, Annie b.1894 Nottingham, Elizabeth b.1896 Nottingham and John b.1900 Nottingham.

Matthew married Emma Ellen SEDWELL (born 8th October 1880) in 1909 at Nottingham, they had 4 children, Emma brought two children to the marriage Jane Ann Sedwell born 15th April 1902 and , Walter Sedwell born 23rd March 1906, they had 2 children, Myra Hopkins born 27th February 1911 and Elizabeth 4th April 1913.

In 1911 Matthew lived at 51 Vernon Road, Kikby in Ashfield, Matthew Bates 32 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Emma Ellen 30 yrs and their children, Jane Ann 9 yrs a scholar, Walter 5 yrs a scholar and Myra 1 month old, his family were living at 93 Bradford Street, Bulwell at the time of his death.

In 1911 his parents and siblings lived at 71 Turton Street, Bulwell, Nottingham. Edward was a labourer, Myra a cotton winder and George a painter.

Commencing 3rd January 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings a week.

Military history

Matthew Bates Hopkins enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, landing in France on 3rd May 1915. He and died of wounds at No. 11 General Hospital, Boulogne on 17th June 1915 he is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery Grave Reference: VIII A 83
