Family history

George Samuel Barker was baptised on 4th March 1888 at Holy Trinity Church, Ilkeston, he was the son of John a coal miner and Elizabeth Barker.

George married Annie Stirland (born 29th May 1886) in 1908 at Nottingham, they had 4 children sadly 1 was t die in infancy Job born 21st March 1916 he died on 20th November 1917, their surviving children were Sarah Ann Elizabeth born 20th October 1908 , Samuel William born 10th July 1910 and Annir born 13th November 1912 they lived at 20 Farley Street, Bulwell.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Faley Road, Bulwell the family are living with William Stirland 61 years a coal miner (his father in law) George Samuel 23 yrs is a coal miner he is living with his wife Annie 24 yrs and their children, Sarah Ann Elizabeth 2 yrs and Samuel William 8 months of age.

Commencing 3rd September 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence a week, ths was later reducued to 26 shiilings and 3 pence on 21st November 1917 following the death of their son Job.

Military history

Private George Samuel Barker enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1sy battalion Seaforth Highlanders, he was killed in action on 22nd February 1917 in the Persian Gulf. His name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial
