Family history

John Brightman Balloch was born in 1893 at Glasgow, he was the son of the late William Balloch a railway engine fitter and Lizzie (Eliza) Balloch née Brightman of 10 Broomhill Road, Bulwell.

His father William was born in 1844 at Grenock, Scotland, he died in 1916 aged 72 yrs his mother Eliza Brightman was born in 1863 at Luton, Bedfordshire, they were married on 25th June 1887 in London, they went on to have 8 children.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 30 Broomhill Road, Bulwell, William 66 yrs is an engine fitter he is living with his wife Eliza 49 yrs and their children, John 18 yrs a coal miners labourer, May 16 yrs a domestic servant, David 14 yrs an apprentice baker, Agnes 12 yrs, Hilda 10 yrs and Wilfred 6 yrs of age.

John was married to Bertha Haslam they were married on 11th April 1914 at St Johns Church, Bulwell they had one daughter, Iris Beryl born 21st June 1917 (who died in 1919 aged 1 year ) they lived at 19 Broomhill Road, Bulwell, Nottingham.

Commencing 14th July 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Lance Corporal John Balloch enlisted on 25th January 1912 at Kimberley, he was living at 30 Broomhill Street, Bulwell, he was 19 yrs and 10 months old and was a collier, he was posted to the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was embodied on 5th August 1914 He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1st June 1917 . he served in France from 1st March 1915, he was wounded a gun shot wound in the thigh and as a result returned to England on 9th June 1915. He served with the 75th Bn, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) and landed in Egypt on 1st June 1917. He died of pneumonia in Alexandra Military Hospital, Egypt, and is buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery (grave ref. F.424).

Died of pneumonia at Alexandra Military Hospital, Egypt, January 4th 1919, Lance Corporal John Balloch, age 26, husband of Bertha Balloch of 19 Broomhill Road, Bulwell. Wife and baby, Beryl. Son of Mrs W Balloch, 10 Broomhill Road, Bulwell. Mother, sisters, brothers Will and David in France.'
