Sydney George was born on 13thFebruary 1895 at Stainforth, he was baptised on 17th March 1895 at Stainforth and was the son of George Edwin a colliery blacksmith and May Schofield, nee Milner of Austerfield, Bawtry,

His father George Edwin was born in 1868 at Fishlake, Yorkshire, his mother May Milner was born in 1866 at Attercliffe, Sheffield, they were married on 26th March 1894 at All Saints Church, Mattersey, Nottinghamshire, George and May had six children but only five survived one dying in infancy, they were Gladys, Phylis, Ivy, Eleanor Victoria , Winifred May and Sydney George .

In the 1911 census the family are living at Nancy Cottages, Chapeltown, Sheffield George Edwin 41 yrs is a colliery blacksmiths striker, he is living with his wife May 43 yrs Sydney is 16 years of age and working at the colliery. He was single prior to his enlistment.

Military history

Sydney enlisted immediately on the declaration of war on the 18th August 1914 at Sheffield. Following training at York he went his battalion to France. He was killed in action on 5th May 1915 and his body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Ypres, menin Gate memorial.
