Arthur Richardson joined the army aged 18 and served 8 years. Placed in the Reserve, he was called up upon the outbreak of war. He went out to France with the BEF in December 1939.

On May 28, 1940, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was under intense pressure to hold a rapidly shrinking defensive line so hundreds of thousands of troops could escape from the Dunkirk beaches. The Lancashire Fusiliers fought exhausting, non-stop delaying actions against the advancing German army.

The 2nd Battalion: Deployed to France in 1939 with the 11th Infantry Brigade (4th Infantry Division). They fought in Belgium and carried out notable rearguard actions—such as the one at Waarmaarde—to protect the road to the Dunkirk beaches.
