Family history

He is known to have had a brother named Charles and two sisters. Their parents died in 1906/07. His father and mother and elder brother were drowned in an accident when ice gave way in Yorkshire.

He spent much of his time with his relative Joseph White of South Leverton, Nottinghamshire. He generally spent most of his holidays with Mr. White, and his last ten days leave was at South Leverton as recently as the early part of 1941 that year.

He was also a great friend of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Reynolds and their son Ted, of Woodcar Farm, Wood-beck, and took a great interest in the Leverton cricket team.

He joined the Navy when young and was trained in a naval school. He became an instructor. Harold was known as "Tommo" to his shipmates. Tommo was Hood's librarian and organiser of key sporting events. He was known to be a great help to new ratings joining the ship.
