Coal Miner Hewer at the time of his enlistment but at the age of 13 he worked as a cotton factory hand at a local cotton mill, probably the William Hollins Mill at Pleasley Vale.

Family history

In 1891 William was living with his grandmother, Eliza Wint, at Pleasley Hill.
In 1900 William married Ada Wood and they started married life living with William's grandmother, Eliza Wint.
William's parents were William and Hannah, nee Wint. They lived close by but they had numerous other children, Harriett,George, Tom, Ada, Gertrude, Graham, Herbert and Lily, so William probably lived with his grandmother to relieve pressure on the household.
He and Ada had 3 children, Jack in 1915, Ada in 1917 and Horace in 1919.

Military history

Enlisted 12/12/1915 into the York and Lancashire Regiment before transferring to the 3rd Coy Labour Corps.
