Military history

VEULES-LES-ROSES COMMUNAL CEMETERY Row 3, Grave 8 S

Sergeant Pryde died during a bombing and low-level strafing attack on German coastal gun positions and airfields near the Cherbourg peninsula in France. His Bristol Blenheim aircraft (Serial No. R3826) was heavily damaged by anti-aircraft flak during the operation. While attempting to return to RAF Thorney Island, the severely damaged bomber was forced to ditch into the sea. Sergeant Pryde and the rest of his crew—Wing Commander Reginald Gilbert Squarey Morgan-Weld-Smith and Pilot Officer David Henry Davis—did not survive the ditching. His body washed ashore weeks later.
