He was educated at Ilkeston Secondary School and University College, Nottingham. He then taught in Stapleford for 12 years.

Family history

He was the son of James and Elizabeth Mary Haines. John James Haines and Elsie Stenson were married in 1936. They were to have two children - Anthony (1938) and Gillian (1943). Elsie Haines later lived at Bramcote, Nottinghamshire.

Military history

John James Haines joined nthe RAF in 1940 and was commissioned in 1943. He was a member of the control room staff of a Scottish operational aerodrome.

He drowned in an off duty canoeing accident. Some reports locate the mishap in a Scottish lake. However, Tony Haines, a nephew of John James Haines, insists his uncle lost his life in the Atlantic near Prestwick.

George was killed 7/8/1941 serving with the RAF.

Victor was killed on 'D' Day 6/6/1944 serving with the Glider Pilot Regiment.
