Military history

July 1942 14 O.T.U on his first operational flight his aircraft was attacked by fighters inbound and outbound, Rear Gunner and Wireless Op badly wounded, himself nearly blinded, hit by Flak near the Dutch coast which injured the navigator. He managed to force land in a field, then after dragging his crew clear, went to get help. Awarded DFC.

October 1942 while daylight bombing on Milan was attacked by 2 fighters, through skilful flying he enabled his gunners to destroy one and drive off the other.

During 2 attacks on Berlin January 1943 stayed over the target for half an hour to ensure accurate bombing. Awarded Bar to DFC.

25 February 1943 Lancaster W4886 106 Sqn Take off 19.00 RAF Syerston mission to Nurnberg. Crashed at Tennenlohe, 1.5km east of Neunhof at 23.45 after being hit by flak from Flak Rgt. ZBV.52, 53 and 4, 2./Schw. Flak Abt. 522 and 4./Schw. Flak Abt. 633. All crew killed.
