Lancaster I ED359 took off 19.12 7 Feb 1943 from Syerston. Crashed in the general area of Lorient. No survivors. Fatalities:

Sergeant D H Lewis (RCAF) (P),Sergeant C F Abraham (FE), Flying Officer K L Morgan (N), Sergeant G E Young (W/Op), Sergeant H L Williams (AB), Sergeant A R Parker (AG), Sergeant J Hillhouse (AG).

Five 61 Sqdn Lancasters were part of a 312 aircraft attack on the docks at Lorient (100 Wellingtons, 81 Halifaxes, 80 Lancasters, 62 Stirlings). 7 aircraft - 3 Lancasters, 2 Halifaxes, 2 Wellingtons were lost.

According to Middlebrook and Everitt ' The Pathfinder marking plan worked well and the two Main Force waves produced a devastating attack.' (Bomber Command War Diaries p. 352)

61 Sqdn's ORB rovides no explanation for the demise of Lancaster I ED 359 . 'Sgt Lewis failed to return,' it records laconically. (February 1943, Record of Events, TNA Air 27/578/4).
