BEACH HEAD WAR CEMETERY, ANZIO XX. D. 1.
John Henry Sheffield's death occurred at the height of the Battle of Anzio in Italy. The 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders had landed at Anzio in January 1944 as part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade (1st Infantry Division) to breach German coastal defenses.By late February 1944, German forces launched massive, brutal counter-attacks to push the Allies back into the sea. Private Sheffield was killed during this desperate, bogged-down beachhead defense phase, where Allied troops faced relentless artillery fire and close-quarters combat.
