He was killed aboard SS Lancastria which was bombed and sunk while waiting at St Nazaire for an escort as part of Operation Aerial - the evacuation of British servicemen from the coast of Brittany several weeks after the far more famous Dunkirk operation. The loss of Lancastria was Britain's worst ever loss oflife at sea. The precise total who went down on the ship is still unknown.
