Family history

Charles Herbert (Bert) was the only son of Charles Edward (Ted) and Florence Wootton (née Hoe).

His father was born in Nottingham in about 1885 and his mother in Derby in 1882, and were married at Derby Christ Church in December 1909; his father lived in the parish of Normanton and his mother in Christ Church parish. They had two children who were both born in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire; Charles Herbert, born 31 December 1910, and Ethel Marjorie (Madge), born 18 June 1913.

Charles, the manager of a hat and boot shop, and his wife and son were living at 119 Anson Street, Barrow in Furness, in 1911. Also in the household was Charles' widowed mother, Maria Wootton, his unmarried sister, Eleanor (20) a housemaid (daily domestic servant), and a male boarder. Charles and Florence's daughter, Ethel Marjorie, was born two years later.

By 1921 Charles had returned to Nottingham where he and his family were living at 88 Burgass Road, Thorneywood. Charles' occupation was given as motor driver (commercial) for CR Horner Wholesale Druggist, but annotated 'out of work.'

Ethel Marjorie married Francis Walter Maxwell (d. 1980) in 1935 at Carlton St Cyprian and they had a daughter, Marjorie P. in 1937 and possibly a son, John A., in 1948 (reg. York).

Charles snr. died in 1936 aged 51.

Charles Herbert married Alice Gertrude (Gertie) Bailey (b. 1912) in 1936 and their son, Charles A [Anthony], was born in 1938. The family was living at 404 Foxhill Road, Carlton, when the England and Wales Register was compiled in 1939; Charles was employed as an electric meter reader (Nottingham Corporation Electricity Department) with an additional responsibility, probably a wartime role, of First Aid Post.

His widowed mother, Florence, was living at 9 Dowson Street, Nottingham, in 1939. Also in the household was her married daughter, Ethel Maxwell (Wright), married, and working as a lockstitch machinist; a closed record was probably that of Florence's granddaughter, Marjorie Maxwell. However, there is a second entry for an Ethel M Maxwell (Wright AR m. 1957 reg Nottm, Rogers JSM m. 1971 reg Plympton), including one closed record, living on Bluebell Hill Road, St Ann's .

Florence Wootton died in 1956 (reg. AMJ) aged 74. Her daughter Ethel (Rogers) died in 2004 (reg. Newark).

Charles' widow, Gertie, married Ronald Cutts in 1948; they may have had a son, David R. in 1949 (reg. JAS, mother's maiden name Bailey). Gertie died in 1983 (reg. Nottingham).

Military history

During the Second World War, HMS Victory, a shore establishment, was a 'holding' base for those between drafts. It may be that Charles Herbert Wootton, who died in Worksop County Hospital on 16 October 1943, had been transferred to HMS Victory for accounting purposes while he received medical treatment in Nottinghamshire. No service records have yet been traced.

He was buried in Nottingham Southern Cemetery, Wilford Hill, Nottingham, on Wednesday 20 October following a service at Carlton St Cyprian parish church (grave ref. Sec H35 Grave 21).

Nottingham Southern Cemetery contains five First World War burials and 185 from the Second World War.' (www.cwgc.org)
