He was the son of Harry and Charlotte Whittington (née Straw) who married at Nottingham in 1911. William was the third of six children born to the couple - Alice (1912), Walter (1915), William (1917), Lewis (1922), Harry (1925) & Charlotte (1927). In 1921, the family lived at 1, Langford Terrace, Meadows, but had re-located to 648, Carlton Road (both Nottingham) by 1939.
