Son of James and Jane Glassbrook of 79 Travis Street, Widnes, Cheshire, England.
3 June 1942 Lancaster R5562 61 Sqn RAF Syerston, take off 00.05, mission to Essen. Claimed by Oblt Manfred Meurer 9/NJG1 inbound at Bienen near Emmerich at 01:54. Aircraft Crashed at Rees 19km NW of Wesel. The crew were initially buried in the Nordfriedhof, Dusseldorf. After hostilities they were reinterred in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.

Sgt William Chesin Howell RCAF - Baled out, POW No 420 Stalag Luft III
Sgt Howell stated they were close to the target area and he was making his way forward in the aircraft when it was hit from above and to the side. The comms went U/S and he looked to the pilot for instruction. P/O Seibold was at the controls and F/Sgt Armstrong was readying his chute, he gestured to Sgt Howell to bale out. Sgt Howell informed the front gunner, then jettisoned the forward escape hatch. He looked to F/Sgt Armstrong and again received the signal to bale out. He left the aircraft at 16,000ft. Sgt Howell evaded for 24hrs before being captured by local police.
