Family history

Son of Alfred James and Rosetta Ringe. Rosetta died in 1907.
In 1911 Alfred was running the Royal Charlotte public house 29 Dock Road, Northfleet.
Siblings: Alfred George (1898), Beatrice Emma (1900), Frank Arthur (1903).
By 1921 Stanley had moved to Wellow and he was boarding with a James Bennett and was an out of worker miner.
Also in 1921 he married May Dickinson, a native of Wellow.
They had 4 daughters, Beatrice (1922), Annie (1925), Edith (1927) and Margaret (1931).
They were all born in the district of Southwell which covers Wellow, but by 1939 the family had moved to Northampton.

Military history

The 5th battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment was part of the B.E.F (British Expeditionary Force). After the invasion into the Low Countries by the Germans on the 10th May 1940 the BEF was pushed back as the Dutch, Belguim and French forces were overrun. By the 28th Belgium surrended and the BEF was ordered to withdraw to Dunkirk to be evacuated.
On the 21st and 22nd of May the 5th bn was at Oudenaarde, south of Ghent about halfway between Brussels and Dunkirk. They were under heavy fire and 16 men from the battalion were killed during those 2 days.
