He attended Rosemary School and then worked at Raleigh in Nottingham and as a miner at Mansfield Colliery pre-enlistment. He was a keen sportsman and particularly excelled at football, boxing and swimming.

Family history

He was the son of Herbert and Mabel Radley.His brother Dennis also served in the wartime RN.

He was the son of Mabel Beresford of 54, Titchfield Street, Mansfield. Mabel was unmarried when she had Kenneth and she didn't marry Herbert Radley until 1922.
In 1921 Mabel and Kenneth were living with Mabel's widowed mother, Harriet Brocklehusrt at 54 Titchfield Street, Mansfield. Mabel was working in a jam factory as a packer and she was 21 years old.

In 1939 Mabel and Herbert were living seperately, Mabel at 81 Ravensdale Road, Mansfield and Herbert at 3, Francis Street, Mansfield. Herbert and Mabel had one son, Dennis born in 1923. Dennis also served in the Royal Navy.
