Family history

Son of Henry and Mary Jane Milner of 63 Sadler Street, Mansfield.
Siblings: Joan born in 1917 and Doris May born in 1919. In his will he left £137 13s 8d to Joan Melling wife of John Henry Melling. Joan was his sister and she had married John Henry Melling in 1939.

Military history

Henry would have been captured when Java fell to the Japanese in March 1942.
He was aboard the Suez Maru when it sailed from Ambo to Surabaya on the 25th November 1943 along with nearly 550 othe P.O.W, mostly British soldiers but also some Dutch. They were all sick and were being moved from work camps. On the 29th November she was torpedoed by the USS Bonefish neae Kangean Island. The Bonefish was not aware that she was transporting P.O.Ws. Most of the P.O.Ws drowned trapped in the holds those that made it into the sea where machine-gunned by the Japanese. There where no P.O.W survivors ony Jmembers from the japanese crew who were picked up by a Japanese ship. At least 250 P.O.Ws were killed by the Japanese.
