He was the son of Miss Alice Winifred May Mendham in Budby Nottinghamshire who was 23. No father listed on Frederick's birth certificate. Winifred Mendham born 1902 Clumber Park Estate,living with her Aunt in Perlethorpe cum Budby on the 1911 census. On the 1939 register she is A W May Mendham (single) amusements cashier living in the Preston household 2 adults 2 children at 3 Tennyson Green. One redacted entry could be Frederick. But 1 of 2 redacted entries with his Uncle and Aunt at Budby could also be Frederick. The family later lived in Skegness, Lincolnshire. Alice died at Spilsby 1983.

His cousin Wilfred Albert Mendham, also of Budby, died in 1942 serving with the RAF in Egypt.
