Military history

Lost in transit to South Africa when the troopship MV Abosso was sunk by U-575 700 miles off The Azores. Out of 393 people onboard 362 where lost.
The Abosso left Cape Town for Liverpool on the 10th October. Carrying wool and mail aswell as 210 Allied servicemen. Amongst the servicemen/passengers there were 34 Dutch submariners being transferred to England to man the submarine HMS Bideford which was being fitted out for the Dutch Navy and to be renamed Haai. The commanding officer of the Dutch sailors, Lt Cmd Coumou, protested that the Abosso was to be unescorted and that her speed was too slow.
Only 12 members of crew, 2 gunners and 17 passengers survived including Lt Cmd Coumou and 3 of the Dutch submariners. There were now not enough submariners to man the Haai so she was transferred to the Norwegian Navy.
