George Read was an air gunner aboard Stirling III EH878 which took off 1948 5 Sept 1943 from Downham Market to bomb Mannheim-Ludwigshafen. Shot down by a night- fighter (Lt Hans-Heinz Augenstein 111). There were six fatalities: Read + NRS Humphreys (P). It was Humphreys's 20th operation. He also survived being torpedoed in the " Waiwera" on 29 June 1942, G Inns (FE), EG Bull (N), HP Delahay (W/Op), FE Somers (AG). DW Robinson (AB) survived to becaome a POW.
