Military history

Blenheim T2234 took off 19.29 from RAF Manston one of six aircraft from the Squadron detachment at Manston, which rendezvoused at Dungeness with 12 Spitfires of 74 Squadron based at Gravesend. They set course to intercept a convoy 8 miles S.S.W. of Boulogne.
They attacked the Convoy but encountered heavy fire from the ships which included flak ships. Blenheim T2234 was observed by one of the fighter escort to go down in the sea 19 miles from Dungeness. The Pilot (Sgt. Deane) and Navigator (Sgt. Watkinson) were seen to get out of the aircraft, but Air Sea Rescue could find no trace of them.

A further search by Blenheim N6182 and R3830 from the squadron was carried out at dawn (6am) for an hour the next day without success and they were then reported as missing. They were one of two crews that were lost from the six Blenheims that took off.

Also lost;

Sgt Clarence Hubert Deane
Sgt George Derryck Watkinson

P/O Charles Brown
