Son of John and Mary Gertrude Preston of 169 West Street, Warsop Vale,
Mary Gertrude had been married before, her 1st husband Edwin Staniforth had died in 1915 and she married John in 1916. She had 5 children with Edwin and a further 4 with John.
Half Siblings: Annie (1901), Eliza (1904), Lottie (1906) Bridget (1910) and Lawrence (1915).
Full Siblings: Alice (1917), John (1921) and Beatrice (1924).
The 2nd Bn was deployed to France in October 1939 as part of the 9th Infantry Brigade, under the command of Major-General Bernard Montgomery (later Field Marshal Montgomery). Joseph was killed during the evacuation at Dunkirk
Frederick Freeman, Stanley Jones, and George Albert Moore all from Warsop lost their lives during this evacuation from Dunkirk period.
