Son of Christopher and Charlotte White of 2 Montague Terrace, High Street, Mansfield Woodhouse.
Baptised at St Edmund's Church on 18th September 1918.
Siblings: Thomas (1906), William (1908), Leslie (1911), Sidney (1913), Christopher (1914), Leonard (1916), Maisie (1920) and Nellie (1922).
Thomas had enlisted on 29th December 1928 for 7 years in Regular Army and 5 years in the Reserves. He was recalled to colours on 1st September 1939 and served with the North Staffordshire Regiment.
Charlotte died in 1925 when Joseph was only 7 years old. In 1939 Joseph was living with his older brother, William and his wife and children at 6 Priory Road, Mansfield.
The 16th battery was deployed to France on 12th September 1939. Initially based around Nantes and in December they moved to Boulogne. There is no confirmed date for Joseph's death as he lost his life during the retreat to Dunkirk and the evacuation.

Another local soldier who has been missing since the evacuation of Dunkirk is Pte Joe White of 6 Priory Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. In the army since July last year being of 21 years old and prior to "call up" was employer at Thoresby Colliery.
