Military history

The 16th battery was deployed to France on 12th September 1939. Initially based around Nantes and in December they moved to Boulogne. There is no confirmed date for Joseph's death as he lost his life during the retreat to Dunkirk and the evacuation.

Another local soldier who has been missingsince the evacuation of Dunkirk is Pte Joe White of 6 Priory Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. In the army since July last year being of 21 years old and prior to "call up" was employer at Thoresby Colliery.
