They had a daughter, Jennifer, in 1938 and they lived at "Trebarwyth" Whinney Bank, Mansfield Woodhouse with William's widowed father.
In his will he left £1487 16s 5d to Jessie. Jessie married again in 1963, to Reginald Angrave.

Mrs W Ranby of "Trebarwyth" Whinney bank Mansfield Woodhouse has been notified by the War Office that her husband Tpr William Ranby was killed in action in the Middle East on 22nd July whilst serving in the Royal Tank Corp.
In civil life he was a school master at Yorke Street School, mansfield Woodhouse. He was 37 years of age and a Brunts Old Boy. He was good at sports, especially football and was very popular. He also organised the night schools at Yorke Street. At the beginning of the war he helped a great deal in the National Registration (England & Wales Register) and the billetting of evacuees. He later organised the "dig For Victory" campaign in Mansfield Woodhouse.
He leaves a widow and a little girl of four who have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
