Son of William Andrew and Katherine Marguerite James of Mansfield Woodhouse.
in 1921 the family were living at the Devonshire Arms Hotel, Mellor where William was the licenced victuller. In 1939 the family had moved to Churchill Mansfield Woodhouse and William was now the headmaster at the elementary school.
