13/14 October 1940 Battle L5499 300 Sqn. Take off 17.39 RAF Winthorpe, 1 of 6 300 Sqn aircraft in 2 flights from RAF Swinderby and RAF Winthorpe to attack the harbours and shipping at Calais and Boulogne. On return, local bases had been blackout due to loitering intruder aircraft. 10 bombs had fell across the runway at RAF Swinderby destroying 1 aircraft and damaging 2 more, it also severed group communications and injuring 1 airman. L5499 became lost in foggy weather attempting to land at RAF Hucknall and during a forced landing a wheel was lost and the aircraft hit trees near Calverton, killing all 3 crew. A memorial stands on the site of the crash at Foxcovert Plantation, near Calverton.
