Had attended Brunts School, Mansfield as well as St John's School, Leatherhead. He read History at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and graduated with a B.A after 4 years of study. In 1934 he taught at St Lawrence School, Lovedale, Nigiri, India.
Gareth was ordained in 1937 and became a curate at St Mary Magdalen Church in Newark.

Family history

The younger son of the Revd Edgar and Charlotte Banting. Edgar was a vicar and between 1921 and 1933 he was the vicar at St Lawrence Church.
In 1921 they were living at 23 The Park, Mansfield. In 1939 they were living at Plumtree Rectory where he was the vicar. Their older son, Harry Maurice also became a vicar.

Military history

Volunteered as a chaplin in 1940 and was initially posted to the Berkshire Regiment before joining the Commandos.
Operation Mercerised: was to support Albanian partisans to harass the retreating Germans.
From the war diary of No 2 Commando: Rev'd Banting took a party to bury Capt Parsons, Lt Coyle, Gunner Clarke and Pte Lyons. After the burial he moved forward to bury the German dead in the same position, but is blown up on a mine.

Local people will regret to learn of the death from wounds of the Rev Gareth Banting, Chaplin with C.M.F and the youngest son of Rev E Banting a former vicar of St Lawrence Church, Mansfield. He was ordained at Southwell in 1937 and went as an assistant curate at the parish church of Newark. He volunteered as a chaplin in 1940 and was first posted to the Berkshires Regt and later to the Commandos. He was with the Commandos in Central Mediterranean area when he died as a result of wounds early this month.
Mr Banting who was 32 was educated at St John's School, Leatherhead and went to Selwyn College as a history scholar. He took the 4 year course and graduated B.A. In 1934 he went to India as an assistant master in St Lawrence Memorial School, Lovedale, Nilgiri.
The many friends in Mansfield of Rev & Mrs E Banting deeply sympathise with them in their loss.

In his will he left£1530 8s 11d to his father.
