Military history
Joining the army in the early 1930's he served in India, Sudan, Cyprus and Guernsey At the outbreak of war the 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters was serving in the 3rd Infantry Brigade, part of the 1st Infantry Division, with which the battalion would remain with throughout the war. The division was sent to France in September 1939, joining the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). The battalion remained in France until May 1940 when the Germans invaded the Low Countries. While recovering from the wounds he suffered in Belgium was again wounded when the Luftwaffe bombed the hospital where he was being treated. Evacuated across the Channel he died on 30 May in Folkestone hospital.
