Family history

George Henry Johnson was born in 1894 at Grantham, he was the son of Edwin a planer at engineering works, and Mary Elizabeth Johnson, née Blake of 43, Jubilee St., Newark.

His father Edwin was born in 1857 at Barkstone, Leicestershire, his mother Mary Elizabeth Blake was born in 1860 at Stamford. Lincolnshire, they were married in 1891 at Stamford, Lincolnshire, they went on to have 5 children.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 43 Jubilee Street, Newark. Edwin 54 yrs is a planer in an engineering works, he is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth 51 yrs and their children, Florence Mylda 16 yrs a general domestic servant, Edith Anne 15 yrs an apprentice milliner, Lilian Constance 11 yrs a scholar and Eva Mary 10 yrs old.

In the same 1911 census we find tha George Henry has left the family home, he is a boarder, boarding at 154 Alexandra Road, Grantham, he is 17 yrs of age and an apprentice boot repairer, he is living with Arthur Robert Robinson 28 yrs a boot repairer and his wife.

Military history

Private George Henry Johnson enlisted and served with the 25th battalion Durham Light Infantry, later transferring to 137873 Southern Command Labour centre, Labour Corps, he died on 10th March 1919 at Military Hospital at Oxford, he is buried at Newark upon Trent, Cemetery.
