Military history

Old Elizabethans Service Roll: Marine Harry White lost his life in the famous action when the battle cruiser HMS Hood was sunk on May 24th 1941.
He joined the Navy in July 1939 and was trained as a heavy anti-aircraft gunner. He was engaged in the operations of the Norway landings in 1940 and in the Mediterranean and Atlantic convoy escourt duties. As well the attack on the french fleet at Oran.

Extra information

The sinking of HMS Hood was the single largest loss of life for the Royal NAvy in WWII with only 3 of a crew of 1,45 surviving. A shell from the Bismark probably hit Hood's ammunition store and there was a massive explosion causing the ship to sink in 3 minutes.
Harry was one of 3 men from the Mansfield area who died on the Hood.
