Family history

The son of Sidney Stevenson Rhodes and the lateLilian Minnie of The Elms Beardall Street, Hucknall. Lilian had died in October 1940. Sidney ran a shawl and scarf manufactory business.
Henry had 4 sisters, Elizabeth, Nancy,Annie and Dorothy.

Military history

Old Elizabethans Service Roll: Flt Sgt Henry Rhodes D.F.M was killed in an aeroplane crash at Burg-el-Arab Middle East on 10th may 1942. He joined the RAF in December 1938 before the outbreak of war. In January 1942 he was awarded the Distinquished Flying Medal for meritorious service during the battle of Britain.

They were on doing a ferry flight to LG 15 (Landing Ground 15) in North Africa when they crashed. They had landed at Burg-el-Arab with another Blenheim which had developed engine problems. They took on board the crew and passengers from the other Blenheim and took off again. But on encounting bad weather they tried to land. They hit Magister R1974 then bounced into another Blenheim and burst into flames.
