Attended Queen Elizabeth School from 1930 to 1935. He was a member of the Old Boys' association and the Dramatic Society.
After school he went into employment with Messrs Barringer, Wallis and Manners (tin -box manufacturer) until he was called up in October 1939.

Family history

His parents were Harry and Lily Hopkinson of Harlowdene, Southwell Road, Rainworth.He had an older sister, Alice who was a school teacher.

Military history

Called up in October 1939 and was commissioned just over a year later.
Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser 28/11/1941: Mansfield Officers Death: Burned while Examing Bomb.
It was revealed at the inquest at Hull on Wednesday that extensive injuries following upon the explosion of a faulty smoke bomb he was examing were responsible for the death of Lt George Leonard Hopkinson (23) of Harlowdene Southwell Road East, Rainworth.
Evidence given by Capt D P Beckett Army Medical Officer that Hopkinson had told him he was about to take the fuse out of the bomb which had fired but had not gone oss when it was suggested to him it might not be safe and he was putting it down on the ground when it went off and he received severe burns. 4 NCO's were also injured.

Extra information

He was given a military funeral with full honours at Mansfield and 7 officers of his unit attended the funeral. He was laid to rest at Nottingham Road, Mansfield plot A. 2784
He died on his 23rd birthday.
