Attended Queen Elizabeth School between 1933 and 1936.He then attended Truro College in Devon.

Family history

Samuel and his brother Robert, who also died on service, were the sons of Henry Robert and Millicent Mary Hackforth. Henry was a Methodist minister and persumably the boys attened Queen Elizabeth School when their father was posted to the Mansfield area. Henry had served with the Royal Artillery in WW1 and then became a chaplin to troops serving in France. After 44 years has a minister Henry and Millicent retired to Weston-super-Mare.
Samuel and Robert's brother Henry L Hackforth saw service with the Royal Navy during the war. After the war he went to Canada as a lecturer.

Military history

Old Elizabethan's Service Roll: P.O. Samuel Nicholas Hackforth was killed in action flying a Hawker Hurricane fighter over Sumatra Island on February 8th 1942. He was one of the last 50 fighter pilots sent in final defense of Singapore and when that fell, they moved to Java and then to Sumatra.
He qualified for his wings at Moose Jaw, Canada.

Extra information

Samuel's older brother, Robert Newton Hackforth, died of wounds on 14th march 1946.
Samuel has no known grave and is remembered on the Singapore Memorial column 43.
He is also listed on the Truro School memorial board and St Peter's Church, Filton, Gloucestershire memorial.
